Research on Piktochart:
Piktochart is a web-based infographic application which allows users tithout intensive experience as graphic designers to easily creat infograhics and visuals using themed templates.
As of 2018, Piktochart has been used by more than 11 million people worldwide and has grown to become a semi-distributed team of 53 team embers with the office based in Penang (Chia, Lianne, 26 January, 2017).
Piktochart described itself as focused on empowering users to create infographics that would be web-publisher ready and able to stand alone as a piece of multimedia content. Piktochart provides ovr 600 templates which users can edit, or by using more advanced functions, customize as desired (AG Beat, 6 December, 2013). This App includes a HTML publisher which allows users to create visuals that can be viewed online or embedded to a website, as well as allowing the user to include multiple interactive elements such as charts, videos, map visualization, and animated icons (Peacock, Marisa, "New Piktochart Release Makes Infographics Interactive: Adds Links, Clickable Tabs", CMS Wire, 6 December, 2013)
Benefits:
Piktochart is a better way to tell stories. Since infographics have both "pictures and words, it represents the best of both worlds: the ability to dissect a complex subject and the ability to sustain the attention of the reader while doing so. According to Caitlin McCabe, a web designer from the United States, Infographics keep people's interest by lending a storytelling and visual element to what can be sterile research (2016). In other words, making good infographics require people to collect relevant data, write compelling text, and present them in an efficient and visually pleasing way. By doing so, infographics help to cover "heavy" topics in an enjoyable way. Moreover, research shows that visual cues help increase memorability of the information. So, making infographic is a sure-fire way to carve your story in the audience's memory.
Secondly, Infographics are a better way to also receive stories. We are visual creatures and ninety percent of the information transmitted to the brain is visual, and that is processed 60,000 times faster in the brain than text (http://www.billiondollargraphics.com/infographics.html, 2015). Consequently, we would rather look at an infographic than read a lengthy text containing the same content. On average, people only see twenty percent of the text on a web page during a visit (http://www.nngroup.com/articles/how-little-do-users-read/ 2015). To put it differently, infographics allow readers to scan or skim the content quickly, then decide if they want to find out more.
Thirdly, Infographics are a better way to reach maximun coverage and attract traffic. "Your message is only as good as your ability to share it." (Column Five, 2017) Infographics seem to be the champions when it comes to sharing. Being pinned on Pinterest, tweeted and favorited on Twitter, shared and liked on Facebook, embedded in blogs and other websites, infographics can reach every corner of the internet. What's better: This incredible dispersion of infographics increases their change to go viral. An important aspect to take into consideration is the fact that a useful and relevant infographic will drive traffic to your site because people will share the infographic and also link to it.
I would also like to tell you that infographics can easily be exported to presentations, posters, brochures, leaflets when necessary as giveaways to your customers. They can bear the logo and the visual identity of the creator, which can be technically integrated into any kinds of marketing campaigns to communicate your brand efficiently.
By the end of 2014, the number of active mobile connections surpassed the total world population ( http://wearesocial.sg/blog/2014/12/mobile-devices-people/, 2015). Infographics come in a common portrait format, which is ideal for scrolling. They are perfect to bring your content to phones, tablets and other upcoming mobile devices.
Incorporating infographics in your classroom
Teaching with Infographics is Essential for Visual Literacy. The importance of infographics in literacy education is essential. Literacy is more than just reading and writing. Literate people can infer meaning, communicate with others, and capture ideas in many different ways. With infographics, I hope that educators can broaden our students’ visual literacy (David, M, 2014)
